How this is calculated

Area or volume from your measurements, plus the wastage allowance, divided by what one unit covers, then rounded up to whole units or packs. Coverage and bag yields are typical manufacturer figures, stated in the result.

Estimates only. Actual requirements vary with site conditions, product spec and installer technique. Verify with your contractor or retailer before purchasing.

How it works

  1. Pick the material and enter the size of the job in metres.
  2. Add the details that matter, such as tile size and pattern, coats of paint, or slab thickness.
  3. Tiles: area ÷ (tile + grout), plus wastage of 10% for straight or brick, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone, rounded up to whole boxes.
  4. Paint: (wall area − doors and windows) × coats ÷ coverage per litre, in 5 L cans. Concrete: area × thickness, in bags at the bag's yield.
  5. Add a price per unit to see an estimated cost.

Questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Allow about 10% for a straight or brick pattern, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone, to cover cuts and breakage. The tool uses these unless you enter your own figure.

How much paint do I need for a room?

Work out the wall area, take off about 1.9 m² for each door and 1.4 m² for each window, multiply by the number of coats and divide by the coverage on the tin, often 10 to 12 m² per litre.

How many bags of concrete do I need?

Multiply the area by the thickness to get the volume, then divide by the yield of one bag. A 25 kg bag of premixed concrete makes about 0.012 m³, but check the yield printed on your bag.

Are the results exact?

No. They are estimates. Real needs vary with the site, the product and the installer, so check with your contractor or supplier before you buy.
