Check an IBAN's format before you pay

IBAN · United Arab Emirates
Valid format
- Country
- United Arab Emirates · AE
- Bank
- Bank code points to Mashreq
- IBAN number
- AE07 0331 2345 6789 0123 456
How this is calculated
Checks, in order: only letters and digits; a country prefix from the SWIFT IBAN registry; the registry length for that country; the ISO 13616 check digits (mod 97); and, for the countries listed, the account layout. The bank is named only for bank codes we are sure of. Nothing is looked up, so a valid format does not mean the account exists.
A format check only. It does not show that the account exists or who holds it. Always confirm payment details by phone before paying a new supplier.

Valid format. The country, length, layout and check digits all pass.
How it works
- Paste the IBAN. Spaces are removed and letters are made capital.
- We check the characters, the country code and the length for that country, for example 23 characters for the UAE and 24 for Saudi Arabia.
- We check the check digits with the ISO 13616 rule: move the first 4 characters to the end, turn letters into numbers (A = 10 to Z = 35) and the remainder after dividing by 97 must be 1.
- Where we know the country's layout, we split out the bank code and account number.

Questions
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. It means the format and check digits are right. It does not show that the account is open or belongs to the person you expect. Always confirm payment details by phone before paying a new supplier.
How long is a UAE or Saudi IBAN?
A UAE IBAN has 23 characters and starts with AE. A Saudi IBAN has 24 characters and starts with SA. The tool knows the length for every country in the IBAN registry.
What does a failed checksum mean?
The check digits do not match the rest of the number, which almost always means a typo. Ask the sender to send the IBAN again rather than correcting it yourself.
How can I avoid invoice fraud?
Be wary of any message that changes a supplier's bank details. Call the supplier on a number you already have, not one in the message, before you pay. This is not financial advice.
