How it works

  1. Choose the barcode type: Code 128 for any text, EAN or UPC for retail, ISBN-13 for books, Code 39 or ITF for cartons and industry.
  2. Type the number. For EAN-13, EAN-8 and UPC-A, leave off the last digit and we add the check digit.
  3. Choose whether to print the number under the bars.
  4. Download the barcode as PNG or SVG and test it with a scanner before you print a batch.

Questions

Can I use any number on a retail product?

No. Shops expect EAN and UPC numbers that are registered to your company through GS1. Use this tool to print numbers you own, or Code 128 for your own internal labels.

What is a check digit?

It is the last digit of an EAN, UPC or ISBN code, worked out from the other digits so a scanner can spot a misread. If you type the full number, we check that its last digit is right.

Which type should I use for my stock labels?

Code 128 takes letters and numbers, so it suits your own SKUs and bin labels. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A only for registered product numbers.

How do I make sure it scans?

Print it dark on a light background with a clear margin on both sides, and do not stretch it. Test one label with a scanner or a phone before printing many.

Where does my number go?
